Land of Nod

The Land of Nod
(Robert Louis Stevenson)

From breakfast on through all the day

At home among my friends I stay,
But every night I go abroad
Afar into the land of Nod.

All by myself I have to go,

With none to tell me what to do —
All alone beside the streams
And up the mountain-sides of dreams.

The strangest things are there for me,

Both things to eat and things to see,
And many frightening sights abroad
Till morning in the land of Nod.

Try as I like to find the way,

I never can get back by day,
Nor can remember plain and clear
The curious music that I hear.

And when Cain, the tiller of the land, was cursed by the Lord after killing his brother Abel, he “went out of the presence of the Lord” and lived a life of a fugitive. And Cain, now the landloper, settled in the Land of Nod, the mysterious land of wandering. Protected by his dubious mark (the Mark of Cain), the eternal immigrant is swept into a twilight zone: the sleepy province of dreams the in-between space of migration.

Anzi’s new body of work explores the experience of migration and its impact on the perception of time and space. The new installations, sculptures, paintings and video art provide a glimpse into the artist’s personal journey into the Land of Nod …

The Land of Nod donates two meanings: in its biblical sense it is the land of wondering, the place in which Cain dwelt after killing his brother Abel. In English the Land of Nod is the state of sleeping and dreaming. Anzi’s new body of work explores the relation between these two experiences, and presents the experience of migrating as a state of dreaming. The works in the exhibition reflect on the migratory position of artist who lives in India for more than a decade. They endeavor to capture the elusive state of living in-between cultures, societies and habituses.

Anzi collects, reconstructs and displaces objects from the subcontinent’s landscape and the Indian urban space in order to unfold their hidden meaning and to examine the constant changes that they are going through in a globalized era, in a world which is constantly moving. His treatment of his materials and found objects is minimalistic and subtle and yet deeply personal and expressive. Apart from sculptures, paintings and installations the exhibition includes video art installation, digital works and new media.
